An alternative but fully representative view of our 7th AELIA L&D Talk which was about upskilling challenges for technical jobs.
In the end of July, we had a hybrid L&D Talk, hosted at the Athens Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation | AUEB premises which focused on L&D for technical jobs. We discussed the upskilling challenges and opportunities created by the technological transformation of work.
Since the hybrid events don’t produce attractive pictures, being avid users of GenAI tools we decided to depict our panel in an alternative way [DALL-E], as if we were all together.
Coordinated by Faye Orfanou, four (4) professionals with hands-on experience in their organisation shared their expertise and extensive experience from the industry:
🗨️ Odysseas Chrisikopoulos, Organisational Development Manager at Alumil
🗨️ Joanne Alexia Betsis, Group HR Director at Saracakis Group of Companies
🗨️ Ioanna Siourtou, HR Business Partner at Kenvue
🗨️ Vagia Apostolidi, Learning & Development Lead at Alumil
A big thank you to all of them for their engagement and contributions, as to the L&D Studio community members who joined the discussion on-site and online.
We would also like to thank the Athens Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation | AUEB for welcoming and hosting us in their premises.
Key discussion points included:
✅ The growing significance of soft skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and resilience to change, especially as technical jobs increasingly rely on software to control equipment.
✅ The rising importance of green skills in technical fields.
✅ A holistic approach to L&D is required, embracing both development practices (such as mentorship and communities of practice) as well as learning.
✅ Effective training tools, including on-the-job training and VR training, that provide immersive learning experiences.
✅ The value of learning endorsement and active support by people managers and directors. It is a key to success of L&D initiatives that directors embrace them and it is of paramount importance that they personally connect with blue collar employees and listen to their needs first-hand.
✅ Rewarding early adopters to encourage engagement and innovation.
✅ The use of gamification practices to boost engagement
✅ Providing platforms for employees to speak up and submit requests on their learning & development needs, as well as exploring areas of common interests and needs among employees.
(*You can find below the Reflection Sheet which set out the issues for our discussion)
We look forward to continuing these conversations and uncovering innovative ways to strengthen the modern workforce through impactful L&D strategies.
