3 Facilitation Tips I Wish I Knew Before Leading My First Workshop

by Vasiliki Karampampa

Hello!

I'm Vasiliki 😊- a passionate L&D Professional and a Learning Facilitator.

â€‹Ι believe that great facilitation isn’t just about delivering content —it’s about guiding, engaging, and empowering learners through inclusive, experiential, and interactive experiences.

Below, I'm sharing three facilitation tips I wish I had known before leading my first workshops.

1. Take Your Time with your “Intros” & Open Up

Don’t jump straight into the first topic—set the stage first! Take time to welcome your group, explain the structure of the session, and share a bit about yourself. Try to remember their names, gain insights into their personalities, and establish ground rules to create a comfortable and engaging learning environment.

2. Make Sure Every Voice is Heard

Foster a safe space for learning where there are no “right” or “wrong” answers—just different perspectives. Be mindful of both introverted and extroverted participants and adapt your approach accordingly. Recognize diverse learning styles and thinking hats, and consider that neurodiverse individuals might be “hidden” in the room, but still requiring inclusive facilitation techniques.

3. Follow the 10-20-7 Rule

For every 10 minutes of presenting theory, allow 20 minutes for reflection, experiential activities, or exercises, followed by 7 minutes of open discussion, key takeaways, or “things to remember” before moving forward. This structure helps maintain engagement and energy, reinforce knowledge retention, and provides a clear skeleton to guide your session.
